GENERAL SUBMISSION CATEGORIES AND ELIGIBILITY:
Category Eligibility Requirements
Best Canadian Feature Canadian feature films with runtimes of 45 minutes or longer. Ref: F
Best International Feature International feature films with runtimes of 45 minutes or longer.
Best Period Drama International feature films with runtimes of 45 minutes or longer. Ref: C
Best Feature based on True Story International feature films with runtimes of 45 minutes or longer.
Ref: D
Best Investigative Documentary
International feature documentary film with runtimes of 45 minutes or longer. Ref: E
Best Narrative Short Film International short films with runtimes of 44 minutes or shorter.
Best Animated Short Film International animated films with runtimes of 44 minutes or shorter.
Best Universal Student film International student film designated as an official winner (Best film) of an annual
student film festival run by an educational institute with runtimes of 44 minutes or Shorter. Ref: G

A. Films submitted to RIFFA for Festival consideration must be entered in one of the categories set out above.
B. Films that do not meet the eligibility requirements for any of the categories will not be considered by RIFFA.
C. For the purpose of the established categories, ‘’Best Period Drama‘’ features are fictional films that are narrated, fictional depictions/portrayals of any historical era or period. The story might be inspired by a folk tale, novel, etc., or a historical event.
D. For the purpose of the established categories, ‘’Best Feature Based On a True Story ‘’ films are ones based on a real life incident/true story/biography. Submission to this category must come with a document that explains the real event and provides supporting links and references.

E. For the purpose of the established categories, ‘’Best Investigative Documentary ‘’ films are ones that investigate and explore contemporary or historical social and political issues. Themes might include miscarriages of justice, malpractice, unsolved mysteries, etc. By submitting films to RIFFA under this category, applicants automatically agree that the ‘’Film Owner’’ will be responsible for any associated legal /financial/ethical implications(claim) associated with public exhibition at a film festival.
F. For the purpose of the established categories, “Best Canadian” films are ones that are directed by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and list Canada as one of the countries of production. All other films are designated “International”.
G. For the purpose of the established categories, “Best Universal Student” films are shorts considered to be the official winners of annual student film festivals run by accredited universities, colleges, and technical film institutes. Submissions in this category must include documents proving that the project won the title of ‘best film’ in an appropriate student film festival. Please note that candidates from Saskatchewan do not have submission fees for this category (ask for fee waiver code).
