Overview
The RIFFA Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship is an annual talent development program that coincides with the Regina International Film Festival. The fellowship will be administered by the RIFFA Academy – the educational arm of the Regina International Film Festival & Awards Foundation.
About the program
RIFFA Emerging Filmmaker fellowship developed for students/emerging/young filmmakers at the annual Regina International Film Festival. The fellowship provides participants with an immersive educational experience in a film festival environment. In this unique mentorship, students move the learning process outside the boundaries of a classroom and take place in various festival venues and settings. Fellowship connects students with filmmakers and industry professionals throughout the Festival days, allowing them to participate in discussions about the craft, business of film, and media.
Primary learning Objectives Include:
- Mastering Industry Networking: Understand and apply effective networking strategies within the film industry. Develop the ability to establish and nurture professional relationships that can lead to collaborative opportunities and career advancement.
- Business Acumen in Filmmaking: Recognize the dual nature of film as both an art form and a commercial venture. Learn key aspects of film production management, including budgeting, financial forecasting, and resource allocation to ensure project viability and success.
- Teamwork and Leadership Excellence: Enhance leadership skills to effectively manage and inspire film production teams. Cultivate teamwork dynamics that encourage creativity, efficiency, and problem-solving among diverse group members.
- Strategic Problem Solving in Filmmaking: Analyze and address common and complex challenges encountered in film projects. Apply critical thinking to develop innovative solutions that ensure artistic integrity and project feasibility.
- Understanding the Impact of Storytelling: Explore the influential role of storytelling in shaping cultural and political narratives. Examine the responsibilities of filmmakers in portraying issues that resonate with and impact society.
- Entry-Level Distribution Strategies: To equip emerging filmmakers with foundational knowledge in film distribution, emphasizing the use of film festivals as a primary avenue for gaining exposure and securing broader distribution opportunities.
- Creative Expression in Filmmaking: This objective aims to deepen fellows’ understanding of the integral creative processes in filmmaking, encouraging them to explore innovative narrative and aesthetic techniques. It emphasizes developing a unique artistic voice and making deliberate, impactful choices in scripting, cinematography, editing, and sound design.
Eligibility: RIFFA Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship is for entry-level filmmakers in Saskatchewan. High school students (Grades 10-12), college students, and adults of any age who are curious about filmmaking as a career path. Applications are only open to Saskatchewan residents.
Cost: Full scholarships provided for accepted candidates.
