ANAND RAMAYYA
Indo-Canadian filmmaker and producer Anand Ramayya founded the boutique production company Karma Film Inc. in 2001 to focus on original content from original voices. Combining a passion for humanist, inclusive stories Karma has built an impressive track record with over 75 hours of completed content and 40 awards including 6 Geminis/Canadian Screen Awards (Canada’s Emmy) which include 2 Canada Awards for excellence in diverse content for mainstream television.
As a creator of content Ramayya has written and directed numerous award-winning documentaries including the Gemini Award winning COSMIC CURRENT, the Golden Sheaf award winning MAD COW SACRED COW, CSA Nominated WHO KILLED GANDHI? and the multi award winning series on diversity LANDING: STORIES FROM THE CULTURAL DIVIDE.
As a producer, Ramayya has worked with creatives from around the globe on projects ranging from animation to feature film and documentary. Notable projects include “Wapos Bay” the groundbreaking multiple award-winning stop-motion animation which premiered at the Sundance film festival and went on to win the “Best TV Movie” at the Kidscreen Summit in 2011. Eco Sci-Fi animation series Guardians : Evolution a Canada / India coproduction and the largest stop motion series to have been produced in India.
Ramayya’s first foray live action was the YA family feature film 45 RPM starring Amanda Plumber, Michael Madsen and Kim Coates. Ramayya went on to produce the YA Webseries My Lupine Life in 2012 which garnered 5 LA Webfest Awards. The Canadian Screen Award nominated YA horror Rufus released theatrically with eOne in Canada and with Vertical Entertainment in the US in 2013 and Wrestling comedy Chokeslam! 2016 winner of 4 Alberta Motion Picture Associations Rosie Awards. In 2019 Ramayya produced the YA adventure Brotherhood winner of the 2020 Canadian Screen Award for Best Visual Effects. In 2020 Ramayya produced feature doc Shadow of Dumont official selection at ImagineNATIVE and Golden Sheaf Award nominee.
In 2020 Ramayya was also honoured with the 2020 Trailblazer Award which recognizes diverse Canadian pioneers in the entertainment industry. Ramayya is currently in post-production on feature dramedy DONKEYHEAD with Agam Darshi (Colossal, The Good Doctor) slated for delivery in August 2021.
Karma has collaborated and coproduced scripted content with some of Canada’s most prolific producers and continues to development with top filmmakers from around the globe. Notable projects include animated feature THE TRUTH ABOUT MONSTERS with Anita Doron (Oscar nominee for THE BREADWINNER), feature documentary THE ART OF DANCE for Bell Media with Kevin Fitzgerald of Hip Hop Films (Freestyle : The Art of Rhyme – HBO documentary award winner) and THE BOYFRIEND with gritty, award winning Indian filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia (Miss Lovely – Cannes Official Selection) and Vanlife with award winning Metis filmmaker and writer Trevor Cameron.
